As curtains came down on what was arguably Kenya’s most well organized grass root football tournament, one team distinguished itself from the rest.

Not because they won the tournament, but owing to the packaging they ensured to give the impression of warriors, ready for battle in the capital’s most expensive tournament in history.

The story of Nairobi Champions cup winners Terror squad has seldom been told, coming from an area never recorgnised for producing good footballers,  they have beat the odds  over the years to ran riot winning easily against formidable sides in the lower tier leagues organized by the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Nairobi Branch.

Only joining FKF district league in 2013, Terror went on to be promoted to the county league in 2014 before joining the regional big boys this year in the Nairobi regional league zone B where they lie 3 rd.

Terror squad, fondly referred to as the red eagles came into the inaugural competition unknown to many that however never deterred them from endearing themselves to fans away from their back yard.

The Kasarani based side not only capitalized in on pitch skill to win over fans and keep their morale in the knock out tournament, the as well benefited from the antics of team’s Organizing Secretary Andrew Anthony Obara “Tony” who assumed the role of top fan and when things seemed to go wrong, formed “peaceful hooligan branch” that would cheer on the players as well as mentally intimidate opponents.

According to Head coach Vincent ‘Musa” Okello, the team, that he co-founded with Tony  in 1999, coming into the tournament, the team decided to play their trade mark short passes, high speed  and  seek to make a galore of goal in the opening minutes to stay cushioned. “Our style like you have seen in all these matches is quick and we enjoy scoring many goals, the best way to defend is to attack we are a more attacking side than a defensive unit. It works for us,” Musa told Sports Monthly.

“I think it is time coaches venture into Kasarani and tap talent, we have sleeping giants here as big teams continue to look on the other side of the city for talent,” He added.

With the gloves of custodian George Owino never letting anything past the goal, the leadership of captain George Odhiambo who emerged tournament’s best player, the hard bouncing headers of Enock Mogire and the skills and speed of Osteen Oyieko, Kevin Ndiba, Joseph Ngithi among the rest, Musa had with him a formidable side that only conceded a goal once, while the team had to their advantage the support of Tony with shouts of “The biggest, The baddest” team in east Africa filling the air.

The team received support from area Member of Parliament John Njoroge as well as Hannover transport company chairman Sam Kago who ensured they travelled in time providing busses for the team transport .Mwiki Member of the county assembly (MCA) Isack Ngigi also a n ever present fan at all terror squad matches en-route to victory.  According to Ngigi, Terror’s victory is motivation for the areas leadership to upgrade sports facilities and held develop talent at the grassroots. “I am very proud of them, and I will keep supporting them. I have terror squad and Mwiki United from my ward playing in the local leagues and with such performance, we must think of upgrading facilities,” He said during an interview at the semifinals of the tournament. He intimated that City hall has plans to upgrade al grounds in the city within their jurisdiction.

The inaugural trophy in their cabinet is however is not satisfactory to Terror squad; Musa has his eyes trained on bigger things as he focuses on playing in the top national league as well as retaining the trophy he won in the next edition. “I will definitely have as more prepared team next year and will defend the crown. The boys have tasked victory and are now hungrier for more,” He said.

Terror announced their intentions early in the tournament running riot against experienced teams like Dandora Ajentos, Gachie Silver bullets, Uprising FC, Indomitable FC before stopping favorites Gor Mahia Youth n the final that turned chaotic.
